PASTORAL LETTER
NATIVITY OF CHRIST 2023
To the honorable clergy, and the Orthodox Christians faithful, sons and daughters, members, supporters, benefactors and friends of Albanian Orthodox Diocese of the Americas
Grace, Mercy, Peace and Joy from our Lord Jesus Christ, and from us, paternal blessings!
"I bring you good tidings of great joy, which will be for all the people; that in the city of David a Savior was born to you today, who is Christ the Lord."
(Luke 2:10-11)
The feast that lies before us represents the fulfillment of the covenant between God and people. The baby Jesus, born in the manger of Bethlehem, illuminates the life time of each of us and the whole world, because even the years are sanctified by counting them from the Birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. The whole creature marvels at the mystery of God's descent to us and trembles under the humility shown by the Son of God, He who is born in the flesh from the Mother of God and the Ever-Virgin Mary.
The birth of Christ the Redeemer, which the whole creation enjoys, makes us reflect more deeply on the mystery of the Incarnation, because the way of the union of the two natures, Divine and Human, in the one Person of the Son of God, is the model of the unity of the Church. Being a theandric communion, the Church is the mystical Body of Christ, in which the unity of believers imitates the unity of the Holy Trinity. "The gathering in the Church is, above all, the Mystery of love. We go to church for love, for the new love of Christ Himself, which is given to us in our unity." (Fr. Alexander Schmemann).
Through His Incarnation, Christ the Lord took "the yoke of humanity", assuming in Himself the universal body of the Church: "He did not take the body of heaven, but the body of the Church. Heaven is for the Church, not the Church for heaven." The Head of the Church, Christ the Lord, Who
became Man, stands in eternal connection with humanity, dwelling through the Spirit in our hearts, "so that, having Him in us, we may cry aloud: “Abba! (Father!),” we may advance easily to all virtue and, besides this, to stand strong and unconquered in the face of the wiles of the devil and oppositions." (St. Cyril of Alexandria, Commentary on the Gospel of St. John, X, II, p. 983).
Dearly beloved in Christ Jesus,
The spiritual unity of the Church, given by Christ the Lord in the Holy Spirit, assumes a great responsibility from us. The well-known statement of Saint Cyprian of Carthage who said: "Extra Ecclesiam nulla Salus!" (Outside the Church there is no Salvation!), truly expresses the teaching of the Savior Jesus Christ; that outside the communion of love, based on the right faith, there is no Salvation. Each person, as a member of the Church, not only has to take care of himself, guarding against sin as a weakening of Ecclesial Unity, but he has to take care of his neighbor with responsibility and sacrificial love, as the Holy Apostle Paul teaches us: "Walk worthily, according to the calling with which you were called, with all humility and meekness, with long-suffering, forgiving one another in love, forcing yourselves to guard the unity of the Spirit, in the bond of peace. It is one Body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope of your calling; is a Lord, a faith, a baptism, a God and Father of all, Who is above all and through all and in all. And to each of us Grace was given according to the measure of the gift of Christ." (Ephesians 4:2-7).
Church Unity must be a model for social unity. Just as the divine love shown in the person of the Savior Jesus Christ is at the foundation of the Church, so the love towards our neighbor is at the foundation of the unity of the Nation, a fact for which we intercede in the Divine Liturgy: "Asking for the unity of faith and the communion of the Holy Spirit, let us offer ourselves and one another and our whole life to Christ our God." (Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom)
May the celebration of the Nativity of the Lord, of the New Year and of the Baptism of the Lord (Theophany), bring you much peace, health, abundant joy and strength in your souls!
Christ is Born, Glorify Him! Christ is on earth, exalt Him!

Hir, Mëshirë, Paqe dhe Gëzim nga Zoti ynë Jesu Krisht dhe nga ne, bekime atërore!
"Unë po ju lajmëroj një gëzim të madh për të gjithë popullin; sepse sot në qytetin e Davidit lindi për ju një Shpëtimtar, që është Krishti, Zoti".

Festa që po vjen para nesh përfaqëson përmbushjen e besëlidhjes midis Perëndisë dhe njerëzve. Foshnja Jesu, lindur në një grazhd në Betlehem, ndriçon jetën e secilit prej nesh dhe të gjithë botës, sepse edhe vitet janë shenjtëruar duke i numëruar nga Lindja e Zotit tonë Jesu Krisht. E gjithë krijesa mrekullohet me misterin e zbritjes së Perëndisë tek ne dhe dridhet nga përulësia e treguar nga Biri i Perëndisë, Ai që u lind në trup nga Nëna e Perëndisë dhe Gjithmonë Virgjëresha Mari.
Lindja e Krishtit Shpëtimtar, të cilën e gjithë krijesa gëzon, na bën të reflektojmë më thellë mbi misterin e Mishërimit, sepse mënyra e bashkimit të dy natyrave, Hyjnore dhe Njerëzore, në Personin e vetëm të Birit të Perëndisë, është modeli i unitetit të Kishës. Duke qenë një kungim teandrik, Kisha është Trupi mistik i Krishtit, në të cilin uniteti i besimtarëve imiton unitetin e Trinisë së Shenjtë. "Tubimi në Kishë është mbi të gjitha Misteri i dashurisë. Ne shkojmë në kishë për dashuri, për dashurinë e re të Vetë Krishtit, që na është dhënë në unitetin tonë". (At Alexander Schmemann)
Nëpërmjet Mishërimit të Tij, Krishti Zot mori "zgjedhën e njerëzimit", duke marrë në veten e Tij trupin universal të Kishës; "Ai nuk mori trupin e qiellit, por trupin e Kishës. Qielli është për Kishën dhe jo Kisha për qiellin". Kreu i Kishës është Krishti Zot, i Cili u bë Njeri! Ai qëndron në lidhje të përjetshme
me njerëzimin dhe banon nëpërmjet Shpirtit në zemrat tona, "që, duke e pasur Atë në ne, të thërrasim me zë të lartë: “Avva! (At!)”, ne të mund të arrijmë lehtësisht në gjithë virtytin dhe, veç kësaj, të qëndrojmë të fortë dhe të pamposhtur përballë dredhive të djallit dhe kundërshtimeve". (Shën Kirili i Aleksandrisë, Komente mbi Ungjillin e Shën Joanit, X, II, f. 983).
Shumë të dashur në Krishtin Jesu,
Uniteti shpirtëror i Kishës, i dhënë nga Krishti Zot në Frymën e Shenjtë, merr një përgjegjësi të madhe nga ne. Deklarata e njohur e Shën Qiprianit të Kartagjenës që thoshte: "Extra Ecclesiam nulla Salus"! (Jashtë Kishës nuk ka Shpëtim!), shpreh vërtet mësimin e Shpëtimtarit Jesu Krisht; se jashtë bashkimit të dashurisë, bazuar në besimin e drejtë, nuk ka Shpëtim. Çdo person, si anëtar i Kishës, jo vetëm që duhet të kujdeset për veten e tij, duke u ruajtur nga mëkati si dobësim i Unitetit Kishtar, por ai duhet të kujdeset për të afërmin e tij me përgjegjësi dhe dashuri sakrifice, siç na mëson Apostulli i Shenjtë Pavli: "Ecni denjësisht, sipas thirrjes me të cilën jeni thirrur, me gjithë përulësinë dhe butësinë, me durim të gjatë, duke falur njëri-tjetrin me dashuri, duke u detyruar të ruani unitetin e Shpirtit, në lidhjen e paqes. Është një Trup dhe një Shpirt i vetëm, ashtu siç u thirrët për një shpresë të vetme të thirrjes suaj; është një Zot, një besim, një pagëzim, një Perëndi dhe At i të gjithëve, i Cili është mbi të gjitha, përmes të gjithave dhe në të gjitha. Dhe secilit prej nesh na u dha Hiri sipas masës së dhuratës së Krishtit". (Efesianëve 4:2-7).
Uniteti i Kishës duhet të jetë një model për unitetin shoqëror. Ashtu si dashuria hyjnore e shfaqur në personin e Shpëtimtarit Jesu Krisht është në themel të Kishës, ashtu edhe dashuria ndaj të afërmit është në themel të unitetit të Kombit, fakt për të cilin ne ndërmjetësojmë në Liturgjinë Hyjnore: "Duke lypur bashkimin e Besës dhe pjesëmarrjen e Shpirtit të Shenjtë, veten tonë dhe njëri-tjetrin, dhe gjithë jetën tonë, Krishtit, Perëndisë, le t'ja parashtrojmë ". We are honored to announce that on Saturday, October 14, 2023 the Installation Ceremony of His Grace Bishop Theophan of Philomelion will be held at St. Nicholas Albanian Orthodox Church. This ceremony is a liturgical rite by which a ruling bishop is installed in his cathedral. This is when he officially begins to oversee his diocese. Archbishop Elidophoros will preside with other members of the clergy in attendance. Having this ceremony take place at St. Nicholas is a great honor for our church. A luncheon reception will follow in our hall. Please refer to the attached flyer for specific details.
Bishop Theophan was born in 1966 in Tirana, Albania. He graduated from the College Economic School in 1985 and served two years in the Albanian Army. In 1991, he graduated from the Academy of Economic Sciences in Tirana and proceeded to serve the Albanian government as an Economics Inspector in the Department of State Controls from 1991-1992.
From February through July 1992, he studied Orthodox Theology in Durres with the first group of students under the tutelage of then Father Ilia Katre. Between 1992 and 1998, he participated in numerous local and international conferences, sometimes representing the Albanian Orthodox Archdiocese (OCA) or the Church of Romania.
In September of 1993, at the invitation of Patriarch Theoctist of Romania, he departed to study at the Orthodox Theological Institute of Bucharest under the tutelage of Archbishop Calinic of Arges. He was ordained a Deacon on January 1, 1995 and tonsured a monastic five days, later the Feast of the Theophany. He took the name Theophan. In May of 1995, he was ordained a priest and elevated to the rank of archimandrite. In September, he graduated from the theological school and began two years of service as a missionary priest in Bucharest. From 1995-1999, he pursued a doctoral degree in theology at the University of Bucharest. At the beginning of 1995, he was also appointed abbot of the Aninoasa Monastery in Curtea de Arges.
In 1995, the Church of Romania released him to the Romanian Episcopate (OCA), where he served as rector of St. Thomas the Apostle parish in St. Louis, until August 2021. He was then assigned to Boston, where he was rector of St. George Albanian Orthodox Cathedral. In June 2023, he was incardinated in the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Following his meeting in Constantinople with His All Holiness Patriarch Bartholomew, Father Theophan was proposed by His Holiness to the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate for the election as new Bishop of Philomelion, succeeding Metropolitan Ilia who reposed in the Lord on October 6, 2022.
On July 25, 2023, Archimandrite Theophan was consecrated as the bishop for the Albanian Diocese of America. Archbishop Elidophoros presided at the service held at St. George Patriarchal Cathedral in Constantinople.
Bishop Theophan is fluent in Albanian, Romanian, English, Greek, Italian, and Macedo Romanian (Aromanian). He holds Albanian, Romanian and American citizenship.
On July 25, 2023, Archimandrite Theophan (Koja) was consecrated as the bishop for the Albanian Diocese of America. The Divine Liturgy in which he was ordained was presided over by Archbishop Elpidophoros of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America at St. George Patriarchal Cathedral in Istanbul. Archbishop Elpidophoros was concelebrated by other Constantinople hierarchs during this Liturgical service, and Bishop Andrei of the Orthodox Church in America’s Romanian Episcopate, the diocese in which Fr. Theophan served as a priest for over a decade, also attended the service.
All the Hierarchs and the faithful present during the Ordination declared with one voice "Axios" - "I denjë" confirming the election and ordination of our new Bishop. After the traditional exchange of the "Kiss of Peace" between the Archbishop Elpidophoros and the newly consecrated hierarch, Bishop Theophan took his first steps as a Bishop, walking toward the Bishop's Throne and blessing all people present with the familiar blessing in Albanian: " Bekimi i Perëndisë dhe i Shpëtimtarit tonë Jesu Krisht qoftë me ju të gjithë".
